Apply decorative finishes to concrete


Application

This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to apply decorative finishes to concrete surfaces.

It includes producing decorative finishes to areas of concrete, using stamps, stencils, colours, exposed aggregate, and textured finishes to produce distinctive featured face finishes for driveways, patios, paths or other areas.

It applies to concreters working as members of a team with at least a moderate degree of autonomy. They would be expected to complete routine activities without close supervision.

Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit of competency in all states except Tasmania. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm these requirements.

1. Plan and prepare to apply decorative finishes to concrete.

1.1 Review and clarify task to apply decorative finishes to concrete.

1.2 Review task specifications and check to make sure they are in accordance with legislation, regulations and codes of practice.

1.3 Review work health and safety (WHS) requirements for the task in accordance with safety plans and policies.

1.4 Review environmental requirements for the task in accordance with environmental plans and legislative requirements.

1.5 Select plant, tools and equipment, check for serviceability and rectify or report any faults.

1.6 Calculate material quantity requirements.

1.7 Acquire materials for the task and locate them safely ready for use.

2. Apply stencil finishes with dry topping mix on wet concrete.

2.1 Prepare stencil finish so that any lapping maintains alignment and bond.

2.2 Lay stencil onto screeded surface in accordance with specifications, ensuring alignment, bond and flat.

2.3 Prepare dry topping mix of colour, stone dust and cement and apply in accordance with specifications.

2.4 Finish surface with wood or magnesium float or steel trowel to a consistent texture in accordance with specifications.

2.5 Lift stencil in accordance with setting time in manufacturer’s specifications.

2.6 Insert specified control joints during placement and/or cut into applied finish after setting.

3. Apply stencil finishes with wet topping mix on dry concrete.

3.1 Clean concrete surface of loose particles and debris.

3.2 Prepare stencil finish so that any lapping maintains alignment and bond.

3.3 Lay stencil carefully onto dry surface in accordance with specifications, ensuring alignment, bond and flat.

3.4 Blend powdered mix consistently in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications, load into hopper gun while wet, and spray under pressure on to dry stencil surface.

3.5 Lift stencil in accordance with setting time in manufacturer’s specifications.

4. Apply stamp finishes.

4.1 Determine method of applying pattern in accordance with design finish and specifications.

4.2 Check stamped finish pattern equipment for cleanliness and serviceability.

4.3 Plan design layout and determine initial starting point in line with specifications and design.

4.4 Prepare base colour and topping dust and apply to wet concrete in accordance with specifications.

4.5 Apply colours as specified at random locations to create desired effect.

4.6 Prepare and apply release agent to specifications.

4.7 Use stamp to create design pattern and surface effect in accordance with specifications.

4.8 Insert specified control joints during placement and/or cut into applied finish after setting.

4.9 Clean concrete of release agent and other debris, and apply sealant in accordance with job specifications.

5. Apply exposed aggregate finishes.

5.1 Incorporate selected aggregates into concrete mix to specifications.

5.2 Lay concrete to ensure exposed stone is uniform.

5.3 Remove surface matrix to expose aggregate.

5.4 Apply chemical retardant to surface to allow ease of matrix removal and exposure of aggregate.

5.5 Leave exposed aggregate, in accordance with design effect and specifications.

5.6 Insert specified control joints during placement and/or cut into applied finish after setting.

5.7 Apply sealant to surface in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications.

6. Apply textured finishes.

6.1 Determine method of applying texture in accordance with design finish and specifications.

6.2 Prepare topping dust and apply in accordance with specifications.

6.3 Float base colour into surface in accordance with specifications.

6.4 Apply colours randomly, where specified, onto surface to create decorative type colourings.

6.5 Apply finish with trowel or other tools to create design pattern and surface effect in accordance with specifications.

6.6 Insert specified control joints during placement and/or cut into applied finish after setting.

7. Clean up after applying decorative finishes to concrete.

7.1 Clear work area and dispose of, reuse or recycle materials in accordance with legislation, regulations, codes of practice and task requirements.

7.2 Clean, check, maintain and store materials, tools and equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications and workplace requirements.
